A Little Mystery for the Summer... free Stories

So it’s summer and I was offered a bit of a mystery to pursue. I’ve more than a passing interest in family history, even when its not my branches of the family. I was visiting my daughter and my ex has been closing her late parents’ condo. My ex asked if I might be interested in tackling the family mysteries her mother never spoke of. She handed me a thick file of “stuff.”

I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been going through it all and diving into the mystery of my daughter’s great-grandfather, who we knew ran away from home as a teenager in England and came to America. That’s the basic story my former mother-in-law was willing to share, but never talked about. She saved her father’s documents, which were quite the assortment… I’ve been going through a copy of his birth certificate, his naturalization papers, and a folded up inspection card from his arrival to America in the 1920s, and a lot more.

I'll be putting an archive of the materials together and have been updating the family tree with details and research notes, which I hope will be appreciated for years to come. Not a bad summertime project.

My love of family history research led to my writing Nowhere to Go But Mars, which is a reverse Ellis Island immigrant experience based on what I’ve learned about arriving by steamship in the early 20th Century. I couldn’t help but think history repeats itself, so set that experience to travel to Mars. The idea of a teen running away to a new world is now tiptoeing around my head as I delve further into the trove of documents… and follow leads on genealogy sites online.
